Make SADD
Friday, October 23rd, 2009
One of the most effective commercials I have ever seen has to be the ad for MADD (see what I did there?) that tells us, “a part of you dies when someone you love is killed.” *
A little girl playing on a swing, goes and lies in the grass and gets covered over with a blanket, in a really depressing metaphor.
Though it literally brings tears to my eyes every time I see it, I’d never thought to try and i.d. the haunting song that plays in the background. Today, I finally did and it’s called “Asleep from Day” by…the Chemical Brothers??! The vocals are by Hope Sandoval, the singer of Mazzy Star, which explains all that fuzzy haunting.
The official video is also pretty devastating, and it solidifies this song’s place in my Melancholy Anthem hall of fame.
The abysmally grey street I’ve been staring at all day may as well have given birth to it, and I am very comforted in knowing that sadness in the absence of light still feels exactly the same ten years later. I love that this (clearly poorly examined by me) album is hiding all dustified and asleep from time on my cd shelf in Brampton, and I look forward to resurrecting it. Much like the way MADD resurrects the little girl in the follow-up ad (for grief counselling, fyi).
There is no resurrection in the real world. There is spring, which is about as close as you’ll get. Sometimes I want to sleep the sunless days away ’til then, and this song makes me feel like that’s okay. Beautiful, even.
*Though that ad about “elder abuse” pretty much makes me wanna die- albeit through less artful means.
